My students need a classroom pack of rats and dissection tool kits.

My Students
I teach at a large Illinois inner city elementary school. I teach 7th and 8th grade science. My students are from low income families and are all eligible for free lunch. As a teacher and lover of science, I want to instill my love for healthy living, discovery and inquiry in my students.
Because of drastic budget cuts, my students are not able to have hands-on scientific laboratory experiences.
While science theory is important, it is also important to demonstrate and explore science. Hands-on laboratory science experiences are critical to the learning process across all areas of study. Students who engage in well-designed laboratory experiences develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, as well as gain exposure to reactions, materials, and equipment in a laboratory setting.
My Project
I recently began to teach my students about genetics and they showed an interest in the topic. We now have compelling scientific discussions regarding mutations and heredity. My students have shown such an overwhelming interest in science I would like to continue the momentum gained and introduce them to forensic science. However, teaching forensic science theory is great but adding forensic science lab experiences really will make this a fabulous and “real-life” learning opportunity.
This inquiry-based dissection will show major internal organs and systems.
My students will explore the circulatory, urogenital, respiratory, nervous, and skeletal systems. I will show them a video about rat anatomy to prepare them for the autopsy. This will allow for several lessons all leading up to the culminating autopsy. This will be a project that my students will remember for a lifetime. As they have not had any experience with hands-on biology, this project will be an excellent forum to introduce them to higher levels of learning and retaining that information learned because of the method of delivery.
This project is also important because minorities and women are under represented in the field of science. By introducing my students to a fascinating field of science, their interest in science will grow and perhaps one day they will become scientists themselves. My students and I would be greatly appreciative if you are able to fund our project.
