This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

John Muir observed, "Any glimpse into the life of an animal quickens our own & makes it so much larger & better in every way." The study of animals offers my students a vast array of learning opportunities that span the curriculum: science, language arts, math, social studies, art, music, etc.

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, my students get particularly excited about animals. We have focused animal units on The Farm, Insects, The Jungle, The Ocean, & Pets, but animals are also part of many other thematic units: Seasons, Fairy Tales, Celebrations, Family, Nursery Rhymes, etc. When studying Pets, we classify animals based on physical traits & record our findings on a graph. In our Winter unit, we build our narrative language by discussing the adaptions of various woodland creatures followed by arts & crafts, food/nutrition activities, & games. Whenever I can incorporate a lion, tiger, bear, puppy, iguana, octopus, or praying mantis, I know my students will be engaged in the activity: math, science, language arts, social studies, music, art, active play. Animals cover EVERYTHING!!

My Project

Our access to live animals is limited to two field trips--The Barnyard Zoo (farm animals) & The Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College. These trips are wonderful learning experiences, but short-lived in the memory of a 4-year-old. The complete experience begins weeks before the actual trip and lasts weeks beyond. Science concepts can be practiced with the 'Feel & Discover Animal Bag' & 'Sort & Match Animal Homes'. The 'Big Screen Microscope' with additional slide kits & 'Student Binoculars' are fun ways for students to learn by observing. Bug/Wild Animal Counters & Farm/Pet Sounds Puzzles tie in math concepts. Storytelling kits about "Rainbow Fish" & "Corduroy" include include cloth characters & props to enhance these classic favorites. Learning Centers about bugs, farm animals, & ocean life provide opportunities for my students to practice skills independently.

My students need science equipment, math manipulatives, puzzles, storytelling/activity kits, & learning centers to facilitate & enrich their understanding and appreciation of the animal kingdom.

These materials will be utilized throughout the school year & incorporated into a variety of thematic units.
