Students with intellectual disabilities and autism need access to all the strategies they can get to improve their reading skills. Our high school students recently received access to an online evidenced-based reading intervention program through a generous grant.
Unfortunately, my students do not own their own headphones.
So, when everyone is engaged, the classroom is an auditory cacophony of reading lessons from every direction. This is very important, unlike typical kids, students with autism struggle to filter all the sensory input and just focus on what’s important. The headphone donations will greatly reduce distractions and improve students’ focus on the task.
