My students need 6 headsets with microphones, 1 camcorder, and 1 tripod in order to prepare to compete successfully in middle-school debate tournament competitions.
Learning to use words rather than weapons to solve problems is a priority for my high-risk, public middle school students in Louisiana. I teach English/Language Arts and have recently started a debate team involving 24 of these students in Grades 6, 7, and 8.
We have been invited to participate in debate tournaments in the area involving competitors from private and parochial schools -- and we need help! We need technical resources for preparation that will maximize our chances of success!
My students need 6 headset/microphone sets to use with computer software that will enable them to research, write, record, and listen to their responses to arguments. They need a camcorder and tripod to film themselves as they practice presentations in order to obtain constructive feedback and to improve performances.
Public speaking and the art of debate are new to my students. By providing funding for this project, you will assist my students in discovering the power that their words can have when combined with well-researched, prepared arguments and presentation skills. Hopefully they will see that words can be far more powerful than weapons in convincing others and creating change.
