This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Not only do we teach classic literature, reading, writing, math, science, history; we teach students how to prepare for careers in the business and tourism industry sectors. Our juniors desire to have more content related to business to empower them for entrepreneurship and marketing careers.
Our students are a close knit community from a variety of backgrounds who have embraced our school mission and emphasis to integrate business and tourism into the curriculum.
Every week, it is commonplace for our students to be dressed professionally, but it is also clear that they exceed professionalism in appearance as they pursue professional conduct in and outside of class during discussions, projects, field trips, athletics and in the community. Often times, it is difficult to distinguish the students from the staff because of how maturely they present themselves on campus. Additionally, each semester students engage in a project-based learning interdisciplinary project related to business and tourism, and during their final presentations or showcase, I can not emphasize how proud I am of their success and learning. These students will be ahead of their peers because of their commitment to learning, professionalism and our community.
My Project
For our fall project-based learning task, students will be going into the community to work with local small businesses to learn about marketing strategies that are effective to the local consumers. Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger is a powerful and engaging text that discusses what makes an idea spread or go viral. This book will empower students to think of marketing in new ways and apply the ideas and strategies discussed by Professor Jonah Berger. Students will be reading the text before they begin their project, and they will be citing the text and others to defend their marketing strategy for the small business they will partner alongside.
Your donations will take our project to the college level.
Jonah Berger is the Assistant Professor of Marketing at the University of Pennsylvania. By exposing students to the concepts in his text, they will learn about marketing at an appropriate level for undergraduate students and business professionals. Lastly, there are numerous resources that we can access online, but few of the resources and studies are as current as this text by Berger.
