My Students

I teach at a small, rural 4 year old kindergarten through 8th grade school in southeastern Wisconsin. There are approximately 180 students that attend our school. I am blessed to teach 4 year old kindergarten in the morning and assist struggling readers, as needed, from kindergarten through 8th grade in the afternoon in my role as Reading Specialist.

My students need high quality books that are age appropriate and readable for their current reading ability.

They often tell me they do not like reading, but what they are really saying is that they can not read as well as their peers and it makes them feel inadequate. This saddens me!

I strive to not only build their confidence as a reader but also to give them the strategies to be successful readers. By having books that they can read and that are of interest to them, I can help them to reach their reading goals.

My Project

The best way to increase reading, is to read! For my project, I've chosen books I know my students will love and will be excited to read.

With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own reading level.

By giving my reluctant readers books that interest them, their self-esteem and eagerness to practice reading is sure to increase. The focus of this project is reading, but what the students gain will go far beyond.
