My Students
I have seven students in a K-1 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime to work on comprehension, math, science and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.
My Project
The students in my classroom are on a variety of different levels with some learning pre-academic skills, some learning the alphabet and sounds and others ready to learn beginning reading skills. We have a variety of activities in the classroom to work on most skills. I have not had students ready to read in my classroom in a few years so I do not have many activities for them to practice this skill.
The reading activities in this project would help my students to work on matching pictures to words, spelling words and learning to read.
Each activity will provide the practice my students need to start reading. They love to learn and I want to provide all the materials they need so they can continue to grow and progress in every aspect of learning. Building words using magnets will help my students who struggle with writing be able to spell words. Matching words to pictures will help my students who are nonverbal communicate words that they know. The beginning phonics activity will help my students learning alphabet sounds match pictures to the letters they start with.
All of these activities will greatly help my students to succeed in mastering goals. I'm excited to see the progress they will make by adding valuable resources to our classroom.
