Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a self-contained special education room. The students in my class are highly energetic and motivated learners. I work with students with varying disabilities such as intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, speech and language impairments, and learning disabilities. My students vary greatly in age as they range from kindergarten all the way up to eighth grade. In addition, several of my students are also English Language Learners, and all the students in my school receive free lunch and breakfasts.
My Project
Due to restrictions in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, my students are engaging in online learning. This is an extremely difficult task for most students, but it is even more daunting for students with disabilities. Despite the fact that there are numerous online resources for students to use, the majority of my students benefit most from hands on activities. While I've acquired many wonderful printouts over the years, it has been a struggle to keep up with the demand of printing new materials.
Having a high-quality color printer in my classroom with a substantial amount of printer ink, will allow me to print more hands-on resources for my student that they can then use at home during remote learning.
For example, I have purchased adaptive work binders which allow my students to work on tasks relating to their IEP goals and objectives. In order to assemble these binders, I must print the pages, laminate the pages, and assemble and necessary velcro to the pages. I have 13 students, which means I am creating 13 individualized binders requiring quite a bit of color printing. Due to my lack of access to a high quality color printer, I have been unable to update their binders. With a new color printer in my classroom, I would now be able to print new pages to add to their binders.
