My Project
Finally, the very old printer in the music room died. For the last three months we have been hand feeding paper into it one by one and on Friday it coughed and took its last breath. We need another one. Often students will hear a song in a store or on social media and want to play it with their friends in the classroom. They'll remember a melody sung to them by their grandmother and they want to learn it for her birthday. To be able to locate the chords on and print them when inspiration strikes is such a powerful example of artistry coming from the world of the students. I would love to keep this habit alive. We dedicate one of our music lessons each week to workshopping the 'soundtrack of our lives' and I would love to keep this tradition alive with a small and fast basic printer. The students are deeply committed to the music of their worlds which are often not in the traditional music educator curriculum. They are willing to do the work to locate the songs, rework, rearrange and recreate for us to present to the community in various ways small and large. But we do need to start somewhere. A chord chart for a bachata song released in the 1970's exists on the internet, we will find it, print it and rework it to play in the park on a Friday after school. It is magical to see who stops to dance or sing along.
