The Power of Play

My Students

Fighting, cussing, bullying, and idleness plagues almost every recess in the inner-city I have ever seen. Students are often thrown out into an outdoor space with no organized activities, no behavior guidelines, and no effective way to let out energy.

My students attend a Chicago Public School in an under-served neighborhood on the south side of Chicago.

Our student body is predominately African American and a large number of our families live in poverty. As with many inner-city cultures our students social interactions revolve around assumed hostility and being in a constant state of self-defense.

My Project

This year our school has partnered with Playworks Inc to help change the climate of our school. Through Playworks' four component program we teach our students social skills to successfully interact with each other. We use games to teach empathy, foster inclusion, and promote emotional and physical safety. All of these skills are demonstrated daily at recess as students are welcomed outside to play a variety of activities with hundreds of other students. This process is most successful when every student is presented with at least one outdoor activity that they cannot wait to get to. On the south side of Chicago this activity is overwhelmingly basketball. Unfortunately we do not have an outdoor basketball hoop, and thus our students are currently playing at a line drawn on a brick wall. By providing a real hoop we can increase our student's desires to learn to play successfully.

Every day students spend 8 hours at school.

During these 8 hours our kids are given 20 minutes of recess; 20 minutes to let go and be kids. Unfortunately, at many schools this 20 minutes is taken over by fights, bullying, and social cliques. By providing students with the chance to play what they want, we create an opportunity to teach them how to play, how to be successful social beings. This opportunity starts by sparking an interest in play. At Burke Elementary, basketball is that spark.
