My Project
Earlier in the school year my AP Literature students read Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun (1959). In 2010 playwright Bruce Norris was inspired by Hansberry's work to write Clayborne Park: A Play. In his tony award-winning play he explores the journey of the home in 1959 and later in 2009 as the once all-white neighborhood has become a black neighborhood and is experiencing gentrification.
I am excited to be able to fit in one more poignant work before the end of the school year and before the AP Exam in May to round out their conversations about Raisin and Clayborne Park.
My students, many of whom have experienced gentrification in their own neighborhood wanted to read Clayborne Park and who was I to say no!
