Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
While they come from a variety of backgrounds, many of my students are first generation English language learners. Many will also be the first in their family to go to college.
Students at our school are hopeful and determined, in spite of often daunting challenges that are in their way.
Some come from the most dire of socioeconomic situations, but still come to school every day ready to learn. One of the biggest goals we have here in the middle school is to broaden the horizons of our students. The greater their awareness of the world outside of their immediate life, the greater their desire to succeed in school.
My Project
For the first time in many years, I'll be teaching 8th grade. I taught all of my students as 7th graders, and started integrating graphic novels into my curriculum with them. We've made great gains in literacy, and in finding enjoyment from reading. Most of what we've done has been with "traditional" graphic novels - that being superhero stories. With these older students though, I want to dive deeper. As well, my 8th graders will be reading the Diary of Anne Frank. I wanted to find a graphic novel that touched on similar themes.
Persepolis is a griping graphic novel that has strong parallels to other important texts, and is relevant to understanding modern world politics.
Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel shares a similar story to Frank's in that it shows a family's struggle against a terrifying government force. Furthermore, this will provide a great opportunity for cross-curricular collaboration. If this is funded, the Social Studies teacher will teach about the Iranian Revolution, and together we will build a multi-genre project that will tie into both of our classes.
