Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

With so many things to look at and engage young minds, it is important that students learn about reliability and credibility in the sources of information they access. Our students may not have access to quality materials in their homes and might be easy prey for those seeking to deceive and take advantage of young people's ignorance.

This project will put high-quality reading materials into the hands of kids who lack such resources and will allow them the opportunity to learn about their world and value their interests in a way that is authentic and relevant to their literacy development.

This real-world reading will result in shaping the reading habits of our youth in a positive direction!

My Project

There are so many things pulling kids attention away from reading. We need to do better at getting kids the texts that they are actually interested in and which they will want to read. The internet is full of unverified and often inappropriate content that kids are accessing to learn. We need to have periodicals in class that show how the adult world gets information from respected and trusted sources.

This project will supply my students with a dynamic, real-world, text set that will engage their interests and make reading in class exciting and fun.

I'm requesting subscriptions for Scholastic Scope, Choices, and Science World magazines. I'm also asking for copies of other magazines including Animal Tales, Sports Illustrated, Popular Mechanics, Tiger Beat, Teen Vogue, Slam, and National Geographic Traveler.

By building a class library full of magazines, students will develop a desire to read for information and pleasure. They will become more informed and literate citizenry.
