Help me give my students a continued passion for reading books of high interest with a variety of topics and genre. Each selected title has been ordered in pairs for tandem reading and paired book discussion.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Eighth grade students are inquisitive, interactive and interested in sharing their thoughts, ideas and points of view. My students come from various backgrounds, knowledge base and abilities - from Special Education to English Language Learners to Gifted and Talented students.
My students love to share their ideas and are at an age where voicing their view matters.
They read for knowledge, they read to interact, and they read for the love of reading. As our small class library grows, it is evident that these 8th graders are ready and willing to pick up "that next book". After the first week of school, books are flying off the book shelves!
My Project
Each title is requested in duplicate to encourage readers not only to engage in the storyline, but share their understanding, question their thinking and communicate ideas as they read with a partner.
Middle school students love to engage in a good storyline with a collaborative counterpart.
They read for learning, enjoyment and to discuss twists and plot lines with their peers. Reading is social and the starting point for discussion and extension in critical thinking.
Students will be taught to use "signposts" to alert them to pay attention as they read. These titles will serve as mentor texts as students practice their level of understanding.
