The Power of Memoirs: Warriors Don't Cry

My students need a class set (32) of Warriors Don't Cry: A Searing Memoir to Integrate Little Rock's Central High School by Melba Pattillo Beals.

This project is fully funded

My students love hearing stories about powerful young people (like themselves) who have made a difference in the world. I teach 11th grade United States History in a public charter high school in Washington, D.C. 100% of my students are African American. The vast majority of my students come from Wards 7 & 8, unfortunately the areas that are the most plagued with violence and poverty in the District.

Our school does not have the resources to buy a class set of this important and riveting memoir. More than anything though, my students need access to more reading material, especially ones that teach them both content knowledge and are written at a challenging but appropriate level. Warriors Don't Cry is an excellent example of this. My students will become even more interested in the civil rights movement if they can read a memoir from one of the young teenagers that actually integrated Little Rock's Central High School.

By having a class set of Warriors Don't Cry, my students will first be able to read something that really interests them (not their textbook) to gain content knowledge. Second, my students will learn about the integration of public schools directly from a TEENAGER (like them) who made a monumental difference in this world. In a community where my students often must support their family members and face many other barriers to succeed, this is an inspiring, first-hand account of a young person making true change.

Please help my students think critically about this important time in our nation's history and help us expand upon our reading, comprehension, and critical thinking skills by providing us with this supplemental reading.
