My Students
You know how fun it is to sing along to your favorite song or listen to your favorite talk show on the radio? We all do and that is the power of listening! The students in my class love to listen to all genres of books and my goal is to give them the tools to listen to many voices all year long.
I am a 3rd grade teacher in a high poverty school in the Northwest.
Over 85% of our students are from low-income households. There is also a wide range of diversity in our classroom, with 9 different native languages being spoken by all 30 of my students. Despite the challenges of their home lives, all of the students are kind, hard-working, and they have a tremendous desire to learn.
My Project
I am requesting 7 portable CD players and a variety of audio books for my students to listen to during Literacy and independent reading time. These books come in many genres including: animal non-fiction, fiction chapter books, and books to build self-esteem. With several different options, students will be able to choose a book that not only interests them, but is also at their reading level. Research shows that listening to books being read aloud helps to build students' reading fluency, comprehension and it increases their vocabulary knowledge. While, I love to read aloud to my students every day, I can't possibly to read to each of them individually during their reading time. These CD books will allow them to stay engaged while listening to animated and fluent readers. Struggling readers in my classroom will no longer say, "That book is too hard for me to read," because CD books make it possible for everyone to read and enjoy any book.
By making a donation to this project, you will help ensure all of my 3rd graders are able to listen to and enjoy many genres of books.
With these CD players and audio books my students will be transported into the world of any book that they choose. Please help us to get these amazing books into our classroom to help my students to understand the "power of listening" and become stronger readers, writers and thinkers.
