Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are organic authors. We are a 4th grade class in an urban area that is very economically challenged. This year , I was given only $200 to order school supplies. Yet, I still come to school every day with the desire to help my students be the best they can be. The ability to express oneself through written word is a very important skill my students practice each day, and you can be a part of their success.

Editing is one of the most difficult steps in the Writing Process. However, when introduced in an engaging manner, students love to take part in it. I would like to create editing buckets where students could meet together in small groups and work to edit their writing. However, I do not have the supplies needed.

The supplies I would need are scissors, tape, highlighters, write-on tape, post it notes, arrows, construction paper, and writing paper. I've listed these items because they'll allow my students to cut and paste ideas. The will be able to remove sentences, reorder paragraphs, and highlight mistakes or favorite ideas that they want to further develop in a very hands-on and tangible way. My fourth graders will love to edit their writing because they'll see it more as a project than a problem of fixing mistakes. They'll learn to enjoy editing through the fun gadgets they get to use to do it. Then, the fun will turn into pride because of the thought and time they put into their work due to the power of editing and revising over the course of their writing process.

You will make it possible for my students, who are already organic writers, to develop into even stronger writers by helping them cultivate the skills of editing with this hands-on and tangible approach to editing their writing.
