Our school is a neighborhood school in San Francisco that serves students in some of the most underfunded and under-resourced parts of the city. At a time when families are loosing their housing, fresh food is sparse and job security is unstable, our school is an essential part of the community. It is important that my classroom provide students with access to engaging play items and games with which they can use their imaginations to explore and grow.
My choice time centers should invite my students into a world of creativity and imagination.
School is the only place for many of my students where they can truly be kids and I want to provide opportunities for them to interact with their peers in positive healthy ways.
My Project
Choice is essential in motivation and learning. When students have choices they are more eager, willing and open to learning new things. It is important as a first grade teacher that I provide time for students to make choices and to guide their own learning. With these new materials I will be able to provide engaging choices in math, literacy and play for my students. During my math centers students will be able to gather in groups of four around a "Pop and Add" game while another group of two will be able to use their "Power Pens" to solve tricky addition and subtraction problems. Students will be able to use self-checking "Light Up Math Activity Centers" to work independently on essential first grade math skills such as shapes and number sense. During play choice time my students will be able to use our new table and chairs for dramatic play along with the new kitchen toys, marble maze and play doh. They will have positive interactions and learn while they build, create and discover.
School must be a safe place where students make choices in their own learning and will be able to with these new materials.
In order for my students to make choices, they need engaging play and academic centers as well as a space to work comfortably. My students will be able to drive their own learning, work together as they engage in self-selected activities and learn while having fun with their peers. I am excited to be on the floor playing with my students as they engage in these new activities and assisting them when peer challenges arise. The more available I am and the greater amount of choices they have, the better equipped they will be to drive their own learning.
