My Students
My students are caring, inquisitive, and self-directed young adults. They come to my classroom ready to participate and learn. Don’t listen to what the news & pop culture tell you - they like math.
I remember the excitement of picking out & buying school supplies as a kid.
As an adult and a teacher creating school supply lists, I am mindful of the fact that over 75% of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced lunch. While I know there is still excitement in selecting school supplies, I am also aware that this can be a stressful experience for the family members who are trying to stretch an already tight budget.
My Project
Many people think that smartphones have replaced calculators. Outside of the classroom and standardized testing centers, this is probably true. The students at my school, like many schools, are not allowed to use phones during classes much less during a test. This means that calculators are still very necessary in my world. Unfortunately, there isn’t much competition among calculator manufacturers, so the price tag tends to be high.
Due to the steep price of these calculators and the high percentage of my students who come from low income homes, I am not comfortable asking my students to buy one as part of their school supply list.
If funded, this project would allow me to add 2 graphing calculators that can be shared among students in my room. Having early exposure to graphing calculators will be important to my students as they move on to upper level math classes.
