it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For some of my students, just getting to school is a miracle. Our school is situated in a gang infested, crime riddled neighborhood, and several of our students relish the safety and security that the school building provides. They work hard to achieve good grades and learn important life skills. Subsequently, hopes of college are alive and well in the hallways because they know that their options are limited. Our students are bright and hungry, but our resources are limited.
My Project
Students will have opportunities to build collaboration and production skills through the efforts of the newly created Drama class. My students need microphones to ensure their efforts on stage are heard in our outdated pre-war auditorium. Working together, students will complete lessons in acting, staging, set construction, playwrighting, and improvisation. Students will work together to create skits that will be produced and showcased in class and for their peers in a fall showcase. They will also rehearse and present a spring production. Arts education is an essential component of teaching the “whole” child. It develops problem solving skills that serve each student in every other discipline. Students build lasting bonds and important speaking skills that will build confidence and Growth Mindset sensibilities as they write, rehearse, and produce small vignettes and full length plays.
