The Places We Can Go!
I am the librarian in a high needs, 95% Hispanic elementary school in Chicago, Il serving grades PreK-6. Most classes are scheduled library time weekly. However, many of the primary grades (PreK-1st) visit the library twice a week. Each week the library serves classes that are blended with special education, ELL (English language learners), and general education students.
The library houses books at varying reading levels and interest for student check out. However, the library does not have any phonics learning materials. To develop the literacy skills of this age group, I would like to integrate phonemic awareness into the library routines. I believe a combination of whole language and phonics is the most developmentally appropriate way to differentiate the teaching and learning of reading skills.
Providing a Reading Centers Phonics Foundation Set and Basic Skills puzzles for the library gives hundreds of children access to materials that have the potential to increase their literacy skills. Currently, our school is not meeting adequate yearly progress in reading. Teaching phonics at the early elementary age provides students with the foundation for reading success. The National Reading Panel (NRP) "...proposed that systematic synthetic phonics instruction was effective in improving reading skills for children with learning disabilities and children from low socioeconomic backgrounds." The requested resources would benefit a large portion of the school in our pursuit of promoting early literacy, including the high needs population.
With your help, our primary students can receive additional reading instruction during library visits through small ability group practice/centers. You can help be responsible for the development of constructive literacy skills and strategies, as well as student engagement. Phonemic awareness is the beginning of reading comprehension. And, reading is a necessity for providing a framework of success to our children.
