My students need the timers for a variety of hands on physical science experiments. We have an entire unit on Motion where kids perform experiments to calculate velocity, acceleration, potential and kinetic energy, and force.
Disney is the most ethnically diverse school in the Chicago Public School System. We have over 1600 children at our school. 66% of my children come from low income households. I have been teaching in the system for over 23 years and have found that students learn science if it is hands on and there is a total immersion of applied concepts. It is important that students experiment, collect data, analyze that data and formulate conclusions based on that data. It is my goal to provide these experiences for all of my 8th graders prior to their continuing education to high school.
My Project
Students will explore concepts in Motion and Newton’s Three Laws. They will calculate velocity and acceleration. They will learn about Newton’s Three Laws of Motion. They will explore concepts of inertia, potential energy, kinetic energy, momentum and force. It is important that students accurately measure time in order to use equations to explore these concepts, analyze data and formulate conclusions. Precise measurement in time is difficult to do using analog clocks. Students need the stop watches for precise measurement in time. The batteries will allow us to maintain the use of the stopwatches for several more classes of eighth graders.
More than half of students from low‑income households
