My Students

Travel back in time, if you will, to junior year. You are writing college essays and deciding what career paths you are serious considering. The first essay tells you to share some challenge you've overcome and/or share your greatest accomplishment. Here is what my students can say: 80% of their class will graduate (20% higher than the national average); many of them will be the first to go to college, pursuing engineering or medicine; many more struggled to keep up a GPA while working 20 hours a week, and all have worked diligently in classrooms that are undersized and underfunded.

My students are in the backyard of UC Berkeley, a STEM hallmark; yet, they have little hope of going when they attend school in the most underfunded district in the bay.

Just 20 minutes away, my students live in Oakland--an over-stereotyped and underestimated part of the Silicon Valley. This means that we, teachers, have to be "creative" in conducting labs on a $350 per year budget and little technology that will give students a positive experience and prepare students for their medicine, engineering or other desired STEM careers.

My Project

In my physics class, I attempt to make curriculum culturally relevant and fun by teaching concepts through themes like music. In my sound waves/ harmonics students learn about concepts such as frequency, pitch, resonance, and damping though inquiry and hands on labs.

With this project, students will be able to analyze resonance of percussion with instruments that reflect their culture.

Students will use phone apps to record the range of frequencies at different parts of the instruments. Then, students will write a lab report on how these instrument could be changed or improved. Last students will design a new model of an instrument of their choice.
