My students need a class set of pendulums to conduct physics experiments.

My Students
One of the first things we do as children is to swing. At first we rely on our parents to give us a push, but we later learn to swing on our own. Learning science is a lot like that. At first we have to be guided and given cookbook-like instructions. But to master science, we must do science.
My students are curious and eager to learn.
They get bored when asked to read from a book and answer the questions at the end of a chapter. Their engagement is only a little better with DVD's. But when I let them do something -- actually design and carry out an experiment -- their enthusiasm increases exponentially, and so does their learning.
My Project
One of the most basic physical phenomenons is the motion of a pendulum. What variable causes the pendulum's period? Is it the mass of the bob or the angle the pendulum is displaced? Could it be the length of the string? This is a perfect problem to give students to help them become scientists and learn more about the physical world at the same time.
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) course enrollment is on the decline.
Students must have authentic and exciting experiences with these areas if we want them to continue to explore and learn these topics. This project beautifully integrates all of these, and more.
