My students need a reliable pencil sharpener so that they can stop focusing on their pencil, and start focusing on the words they are writing.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
People who aren't teachers probably don't think about how important it is to have a good pencil sharpener in their classroom. Currently, we don't have one at all and have been using mechanical pencils which causes a whole set of problems.
My students live in a very low income area.
Many of them are refugees from Burma and Africa. They already have so many issues that hold them back on a daily basis, I would just like for them to have a working pencil sharpener in their classroom. Currently, we use mechanical pencils but as many of my students struggle with writing, the mechanical pencils just aren't right for them. The lead breaks because they need to push harder to write, the pencils are cheap so they break, etc...We can't use the regular pencils because we have no way of sharpening them. I have tried handheld sharpeners, but they always break and also get pencil shavings everywhere. I have had electric ones that always break. It would be such a luxury to have a good, working pencil sharpener that they can use. It would be one less obstacle for them.
My Project
My students already struggle with so much in school. Being able to write with a sharpened pencil and not having to worry about the pencil sharpener breaking would make that one less thing for them to struggle with. It may seem silly, but it's the little things that get in the way sometimes.
This project is important so that the students can focus on what they should be focusing on, what they're writing and what they're thinking.
Not "will my pencil work?" or "my pencil broke, now I can't do work." Please help us to have a more efficiently run classroom.
