My Students

My students are eager, creative, and resilient. They have persevered through this extremely challenging year of distance learning. This Fall, students from five different elementary and K-8 schools will start the year at a brand new comprehensive middle school. Students will be anxious about starting a new school and meeting so many new classmates after barely interacting with other students in classrooms this year. They will also be thrilled to participate in hands-on scientific investigations!

After spending so much time isolated at home, these students are yearning for a warm, welcoming classroom environment.

Middle school is well-known to be challenging socially and emotionally. Add to that, the challenge of learning at home for over a year with precious few hours of virtual instruction, and you have a situation in which capable, motivated students have fallen behind or lost their confidence. Even the most confident will be nervous starting at a brand new school.

In addition, many face significant challenges outside school. Over seventy-five percent of our student families are low-income. Our school also serves a number of families residing at the local emergency family shelter.

My Project

The peace corner is a powerful and touching space in the classroom that supports self regulation. It’s called the “peace corner” because there is something peaceful about simply being allowed to experience our feelings and take care of our self in the way that is right for us. The use of a peace corner can transform the culture of the classroom.

Help set up a peace corner in my middle school science classroom with sensory items, calming scents and visuals like a lava lamp, a balance ball, a Zen sand garden, and tools for taking a brain break and reflecting about feelings.

The Oberman Sphere and perpetual motion machines will be used as breathing tools. Since we all need different things at different times, there isn’t one magic thing that students practice in the peace corner. Students will be able to use a variety of calming tools and techniques explore things on their own and get a sense of what works best for them.

The peace corner supports the mental, social and emotional health of students as they learn to take care of their feelings and help their brain be ready to think and learn again. Once students can reconnect with their inner knowing, they can go on, and be ready to rejoin the group. More importantly, students will learn to take care of their feelings and become more reflective in all aspects of their lives.
