My Students
Some find it hard to believe that a novel written by an Oklahoma teenage girl in the 1960's could be relevant to Los Angeles teens in the 21st century, yet it certainly is. Over the past several years, I have found that my students immediately identify with these lost youths and their internal angst.
My students live in southern California.
They are bright and inquisitive, although like most students today, they do not like to read unless they feel the material is immediately relevant to them. My school is unique-a K-12 campus, with about 50 children in each grade. My 8th grade students are a mixture of Armenians, Latinos, whites, African-Americans, and Asians.
My Project
Over the past several years of teaching 8th grade English, I have found that The Outsiders is one of the most successful books that we have studied. The students feel truly engaged in the lives and outcomes of Pony Boy, Soda Pop, Darrie, Johnny, and the other characters. They engage in spirited conversations about what the characters should or should not have done, and they are able to extrapolate from the characters' behavior to their own.
This project will engage my students intellectually and emotionally, and it will help them to find a book that is relevant to their lives.
Reading a book that inspires them will help them begin their path to becoming life-long learners, critical thinkers, and people who care about the future of their country.
