The Other Side Of American History

My students need to read about the history of America that is not necessarily in the textbook. They need to believe that the actions of the individual are important.

My Students

Did you ever sit in a class and wonder "What does this have to do with me?" These books describe points in our history that show learners what the textbook doesn't. It shows learners that people have stood up and acted in situations not dissimilar to those they encounter now.

M learners live in an economically depressed area of North Carolina where traditionally their choices after leaving school where the factory or the field.

Although their families did well with those possibilities for generations, those jobs are becoming harder to find and keep. My learners need to see that their choices have consequences and that those who came before them have sacrificed to give them these opportunities.

My Project

We will read these books in small groups over the course of the year. We will teach the material to each other so that my learners can not only understand the thrill of learning, but to learn how to inspire others. These books are about standing up for ones dignity and for enduring great trials so that others will not have to. They will develop projects that transmit the knowledge that they have gained.

Children under the age of 18 are citizens in training.

They must and will learn to be some sort of American citizen. What kind of person they grow up to be depends on their parents, teachers, and their friends. Most importantly who they grow up to be depends on what they learn. These books will allow them to learn that although the past was not always easy great things can come of great deeds.
