This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom come from differing backgrounds, but all of them bring a unique personality to our community of learners. My students come from low-income/high poverty homes and with that comes different challenges. As their teacher it is my duty to provide the safest and warmest environment for them to have their best opportunity for learning. My students need me to be more than just their teacher, sometimes I'm a nurse, counselor, friend, mom, or superhero and with that I strive to help my students in any way possible.

My Project

I have recently been to several math training sessions and one thing that has been consistent throughout is that students need access to manipulatives during math instruction. I currently have some math manipulatives in my classroom, but either they aren't big enough class sets or pieces have gone missing along the years. Math is such a vital component in everyday life and it is my goal this year to make sure every student in my classroom makes gains in their math abilities. In order to do this, I know that I need to make sure my students have math manipulatives.

The supplies I have asked for would help enrich my math instruction period for small group, partner games, and whole group activities.

The class set of clocks would be used during our time unit to help students get a hands-on experience with how analog clocks work and how to read time correctly. The playing cards, transparent spinners, counting chips, and reusable pouches would be used in math games focusing on addition and subtraction.

I think the interlocking base ten block set will be the most vital piece in my room. In second grade we focus a lot on understanding place value and using that understanding to solve more complex word problems. Most students come in with knowing what a 2-digit number represents, but usually don't have a concrete understanding that 56 is that same value has having 56 ones or 5 tens and 6 ones. Therefore when we start talking about 3-digit numbers our students will struggle. By having this interlocking set students can actually build a ten rod with ten ones or a hundred block with ten, ten rods. Hopefully by using the manipulatives students will better understand why we regroup numbers when adding and borrow when subtracting.
