Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students live and attend school in one of the poorest congressional districts in America. But you wouldn't know that from their smiles, vibrancy, hopes, and dreams. Many of them spend their lunch periods in my classroom.
It is a safe space for them; They know that my classroom is always open.
During lunch, many of them hang out. It is one of the only times during the day when they can reconnect with friends outside of their classes. Some of them crochet, and some play music, but all of them are eager to spend time with each other in a cozy, stress-free environment.
At present, between 30 and 40 students visit my room during lunch. They take turns sitting on the 1 bean bag we have. Often 3 of them sit on the bean bag meant for 1. The bungee chair will offer an additional comfy corner.
The ceramic pot will help to allow them to continue the small garden we have started which currently consists of 2 small plants.
Additionally, during the last periods of the day, after lunch, they prefer the lights dim. This helps them to focus. However, we do not have materials to help create the atmosphere that many of them feel they could thrive and de-stress. The light wall will help with this. In addition, the lamps will provide students who prefer lights while writing the opportunity to have them while their peers write.
