My Students

Sometimes a book really stays with you for months and years. The book, The One and Only Ivan, is like that. Very simple and easy to read, but a story based on facts about friendship. My class wants to read this book and create a class play based on the book.

I teach a wonderful, creative group of students who have hearts of gold.

They want to try hard every day and learn new ideas and academics in fifth grade. Our school is a Title I school where over 48% of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. We are a small school filled with students from many different ethnic backgrounds, from the Philippines to Mexico. We live in sunny Southern California. Our school specializes in integrating the arts into the academic curriculum. I teach fifth grade, and my class has two students with autism, many GATE students, and students that are a few grade levels below the fifth grade math and reading levels, but we are working to change that!

My Project

I have requested a class set of the novel, The One and only Ivan, so my students can read the book and be inspired to create a class play based on the book. After we finish the book and read through the two non-fiction books about the real Ivan, my students will find their favorite parts of the story and turn these scenes into dialogue and action for a play. We will add characters to the original story so that every student in my class will have a role in the play. This type of project-based learning means that for months my class will think about the play, write the play, audition for roles in the play, learn their lines, make the backgrounds and sets, and eventually perform the play for the school, parents, and our community.

Your donation to this project means that my students can start reading this novel right away.

We can't wait to start this amazing project. Your help means so much to our class! This will be a book that my students read year after year!
