This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ivan is an easy going gorilla, who lives at the Big Top Mall behind bars of solitude. Until now. During our whole school read aloud, my students are set to embark on a fabulous journey with Ivan and his new companion, a baby elephant named Ruby.

I have never seen excitement for a read aloud like I have seen from my 500 students who are getting ready to read, 'The One and Only Ivan' by Katherine Applegate.

I teach the arts and Gifted program for these low income students and I know this will be a book that will stay with them for decades to come.

My Project

Since my specialty is connecting english and math to the arts, I would like the students to develop an artistic interpretation of the Ivan's story and be able to meet the author and share their work with her while hearing her presentation on creating Ivan's world. I am requesting a donation that will help us bring Katherine Applegate to our school.

Interaction with the author of a life changing book will have a profound impact on my students' love for reading as well as their love for the dynamic duo, Ruby and Ivan.
