My Project

I currently teach two classes of 33 students in a CORE ELA / History classroom. They are a microcosm of our world - bringing a richness of diversity of cultures, customs/traditions, and language. Acceptance & celebration of differences makes us a stronger community. I hold the strong belief that we can - and do - learn from all our experiences. Thus, I am excited to share the book, "Refugee" by Alan Gratz with my students.

Teaching empathy in today's world is imperative.

Discussions surrounding the story of the three characters, Josef, Mahmoud, and Isabel, help my middle-schoolers think through what they have learned and/or experiences they've had that can draw on to problem-solve a sticky situation like the one that these characters find themselves in. These characters are fleeing their countries during different eras for different reasons. Their struggles are nothing like anything a kid from the United States comprehend.

Students learn about real struggles and life-threatening events that these characters go through in order to reach a land where they can live without persecution, hate, and violence. The go through multiple near-death experiences throughout this cliffhanger book. Students will be asked to empathize and gain sympathy and understanding for other cultures, people of color, and religions while reading this novel.

I love this story because it shows how one's life experiences can contribute to one's future successes.
