My Project
As an ESE Intervention Representative, I support educators with integrating SEL practices into their academic teaching and support students' development across the five areas of social and emotional competence.
For this project, I envision creating a physical space in my building, called "The Nirvana" that prioritizes students' emotional health and supports students as they take ownership of regulating their emotions.
This space will be accessible to students who need time and practice previously learned strategies to regulate their emotions, ultimately helping them return to class feeling ready to learn. This space will provide approximately 40 students who have met the criteria to qualify to be placed in a behavior program and specially designed instruction that include varying accommodation. Their behavior disorder varies in nature, however, they possess the abilities support to intricate past behaviors and continue to have an exemplary academic and social life.
As an ESE Intervention Representative, I have realized the importance of a calming space. A Calming space where students can focus on positive intervention strategies as they continue to learn self-regulation skills in a space they feel safe and supported. My goal with this Donors Choose project is to fill the space with not only tools for emotional regulating, like calming strips or fidgets, but also aspects that make it a calming environment, like a rug or bean bags for seating. All of these tools can assist a student throughout their school day.
