My Students

While I love teaching, earlier this year I found myself looking for "the next big thing." When you open your mind to this, suddenly opportunities present themselves. Now that I've found the next big thing, it is time to seek new knowledge.

I am currently charged with tapping the potential of our most gifted students in grades 3-5.

To do this I need to be well versed in strategies for engaging and facilitating the learning of gifted students. I am currently seeking certification through the state university system which will result in additional licensure to teach academically/intellectually gifted students. This program consists of 4 courses. In October, I took on the role of academically gifted (AG) teacher/consultant. While I have been teaching for 17 years, have a master's degree, and am national board certified, serving in this role is a new adventure. My previous experience has been in the general education classroom (mostly upper elementary) and as a STEM lab teacher for grades 3-5. Although I also hold a local endorsement for teaching AG students, the only requirements were 2 courses offered through my district.

My Project

I am currently seeking certification through the state university system which will result in additional licensure to teach academically/intellectually gifted students. This program consists of 4 courses. The materials I am seeking through this proposal will support my professional growth while taking the certification courses this spring and summer. Previous experience has taught me that remaining organized is critical to success. I need notebooks, sticky notes, colored pens, and tools to monitor my "plan of attack" for completing the work associated with this licensure program. I also need reference materials to provide me with research based teaching techniques as well as insight into the mind of the gifted child. This project will enable me to better understand and meet the diverse needs of the 64 high achieving and gifted students with whom I work.

The students with whom I work have bright futures.

One of my goals as both a mom of 4 children and an educator is to demonstrate a passion for continued learning. Participating in professional development courses is one way to do this. I am a confident teacher but I know that even the best of us can always learn something new. I am constantly seeking to improve my craft. Staying organized and having quality literature are two critical pieces of my ongoing quest for continuous improvement.
