My Students
Geography is a class where students learn about the world. I want the subject to come alive for the students. They need to experience cultures and topography of the land. Since we can't see it first hand, videos are a good alternative, but I need more updated videos than I presently have.
My students are young and curious 9th graders.
They are fascinated with information, but need a more diverse way of learning beyond textbooks and worksheets. Many of the students are visual learners, and watching the requested videos really highlights the countries and cultures of the people. Geography is a required class that all 9th graders must take, and the students in my class vary from gifted and talented to low functioning students. I find that these videos are are good way to meet the needs of all students regardless of their level of intellect.
My Project
My students need updated geography videos like Globe Trekker's North Africa, Mongolia, and Ultimate China. Most of the videos I'm requesting come from the "Globe Trekker" series. These videos are very well done. They feature actual guides traveling to the various countries throughout the world. They highlight ethnic food, famous historical sights, cultures and customs, holidays and celebrations, and the beauty of the countries with its land and people. They also discuss the difficulties of the countries which gives the students a well rounded view of the areas of the world. These videos provide several clips that we will use to guide the students in classroom discussions.
These are popular videos that many teachers have had success using as teaching tools in their classrooms.
They
are not just a way of providing information necessary to help students prepare for written tests, they also help in educating the students about the world they live in. Since it's impossible to travel to these beautiful countries around the world, the videos provide a way for students to virtually experience the culture and country without actually being there.
