Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Middle schoolers are amazing. They're young enough that they're still enthusiastic about everything, and they're old enough to be aware that the choices they make every day will impact them in the future.
A big part of my job as a middle school teacher is building the skills of self-awareness and self-advocacy in each of my students.
I teach them to think about and understand what they need to be successful and how to get the supports they've identified.
Our school has a diverse grouping of students learning English as a new language, students with physical and learning disabilities, and students from every socio-economic background you can imagine. What do all of these kids have in common? Each and every one of them can learn. Each and every one of them can be successful. Each and every one of them is cared for in our school. Each and every one of them is special to me.
My Project
Teaching and learning math in person is a challenge but trying to do this remotely is a gargantuan task. There's so much to think about: how to effectively teach complex thinking to a variety of learning modalities, how to engage learners who are not accustomed to work this independently, how to work asynchronously because our students have shifted their sleep/work schedules dramatically, how to support students and families when they have questions in real time, and how to meaningfully assess and track what students have learned over time.
Educational technology, like Edpuzzle, allows our school's math teachers to provide interactive video instruction by embedding questions into our video lessons.
Edpuzzle allows us to use either our own videos or publicly available videos and enrich the instruction with questions we've written and embedded within the video. We can see how students are interacting with and understanding the instruction and use that feedback to inform our next steps.
If I can't be in the classroom guiding my students, Edpuzzle lets me teach in an engaging and effective way while allowing me to gather feedback on what students are learning and what supports they need.
