Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a third-year Special Education teacher in the South Bronx. While I am a Special Education teacher, I specialize in Earth Science which means i get to teach self-contained classes each year. Self-contained means that every student in that class has some kind of learning the difference (I do not call them "disabilities"). Because of the various learning differences and it being my just my third year teaching, I have been exploring innovative ways to create accessible Earth Science content.
With kids that learn differently than general education students, you have to focus on each of their strengths and assist with each of their weaknesses.
In order to do this effectively, I have to make my curriculum accessible for all my students and one of the most effective ways to do that is through technology. All of my lessons try to incorporate reading, writing/typing, videos, audio, drawing, and discussion. My students thrive in this kind of learning environment!
When we were shut down due to the pandemic we moved immediately into remote learning. This proved to be really wonderful for some students; however, it was extremely difficult for others. This school year needs all the help it can get.
My Project
As the largest school district in the nation, NYC public schools are going back for a hybrid learning experience this school year. This means that on any given day, I will be teaching students in the classroom and at home, usually at the same time. While the Department of Education has not really given much guidance on how I am expected to do this, I am working on developing my own plan so that all of my students are getting live instruction regardless of where they are. Using a online platform called Nearpod, I can create interactive lessons that I control and can use in-person or through video calls. I plan to do both this school year so my students at home feel as if they are in person with my students in the classroom.
In order to control the lesson while being socially-distanced, I need to move around the room and will use an iPad to do that and operate the interactive lesson at the same time.
Unfortunately, this year our budget was slashed by millions of dollars and so our school is strapped for cash. I requested this item but they are using most of the money to make sure each one of our students has a laptop this year. In addition, we normally get $250 to spend on classroom supplies but that was also taken away this year which why I requested pencils and sanitizing wipes (to clean laptops). This are unprecedented times and as a third year teacher, I am really doing my best to be as creative as possible in order to give all of my students the best learning experience as possible regardless of where they are learning from.
