My Students

I teach at a Title I school and my students come from economically marginalized communities and many have weak educational backgrounds. All of my students come to school eager to learn something new every day even if the teenager in them cannot demonstrate the emotion. My students have many personal challenges that make school and the requirements of school particularly daunting. That said, all of my students are held to the highest of expectations, both intellectual and professional.

My students are inquisitive and curious about other cultures.

Many of my students live very insular lives even though they live in NYC. While my students are exposed to other peoples and cultures, that contact is superficial. In my Social Studies classroom, units are anchored in geography, driven by primary sources and analyzed through complex secondary sources. Social Studies is the perfect vehicle to teach history, inculcate professionalism and cultural capital to society's most marginalized students.

My Project

As a graduate of Rutgers Law School, I am thrilled to be teaching a law class to sophomores this year. My law class is large with thirty-four students and they represent students from both my Honors Global History class and my ICT Global History class. The students have been so excited to learn the subject-matter that I have received wonderful "buy-in," even for complex texts. What has been fascinating to observe is that their interest in the law is such that the bridge of understanding is crossed daily and students that struggle with reading comprehension push themselves past their comfort zones to complete assigned tasks. We have a detailed curriculum that includes all major types of law and space for oral arguments and brief writing. Yet, how can one discuss the law without discussing the implications of laws and policies?

"The New Jim Crow," by Michelle Alexander is an astounding read that challenges the motivations and goals of the criminal justice system.

This searing examination of race, class and the criminal justice system was intersectional long before the term came into vogue. We read the introduction and my students were 1) fascinated; 2) intrigued; 3) alarmed and hurt. I would like a copy of the book for each student so that we can read the whole book and annotate it deeply. As the class is comprised of a range of intelligences, the class will read the book in a non-traditional manner. It is very important to me that students acquire the skill of deep annotations, that is the ability to identify the key words/concepts/ideas within a text. This is an incredibly powerful book that will empower the students who could end up as statistics within the book.
