Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I read that one already!" This is something I hear my students say all of the time. Once they finish reading one of only 50 books we have in our library to share among 20 students. I need serious help adding books to my library.
I teach in a low-income, poverty stricken area, some of our kids live in shelters, others are raised by grandparents or a family friend.
However, they are the sweetest kids in the world. As a community we all do our best to help these kids succeed. The one thing that I noticed no matter what grade I teach there, is they just want a fighting chance. They want to be like everyone else. I do everything in my power to make sure they get that opportunity.
My Project
My library isn't really what you could consider a proper classroom library. I have limited resources, and as a first grade teacher I have to teach students who are at different reading levels, students that have different reading interests, as well as use my library to teach reading and writing through literature. If you purchase a leveled library for us, we can send students home with books to read over the weekend, they can practice reading skills at home and reinforce what they've learned in the classroom. Not to mention I can move my students along as far as reading goals are concerned. I can use these books to point out the different genres they will need to know and finally be able to teach with proper materials. With a proper leveled library, the possibilities are endless.
Your contribution will make a significant impact to me and most importantly to my students.
They will be so happy to know that people, whom they've never met, care so much about their education.
