My Students
My students are a wonderfully talented, diverse group of young people. Most of my students come from difficult circumstances and are not strangers to the problem of poverty. Although they are often confronted with a daily struggle for survival, they come to school with hungry minds, resilience, and a willingness to learn.
Our school may be located in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Hawaii, but my students are focused on improving themselves and their community, through their education.
They know that they have the power to achieve great things with knowledge, understanding, and perseverance.
My Project
My students need a classroom set of Long Way Down, by Jason Reynolds, a recent National Book Award Finalist, as well as a handful of the author’s other novels, to read and enjoy! My students would love to read "Long Way Down" by Jason Reynolds cover to cover. I teach a reading interventions course, and my students are the ones with the greatest challenges in basic literacy skills. We'd previously looked at excerpts from the novel as a class, but my students are hungry for more and told me they want to read the whole book! This is a chance for me to empower their literacy.
Aside from meeting the achievement of reading a whole novel cover to cover, this book will also encourage them to write and think creatively.
We want to hold class discussions together, and I'd like my students to write their own stories that encourage other students struggling in school to read and enjoy literature. Our library is outdated and underutilized, and we need these books in order to empower them as readers.
