This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember when you were young, some of the books you read and fell in love with? These books helped develop that early love for reading! My fourth grade students range in reading abilities from Kindergarten to Fourth grade. Majority of my students come from low income families, many of these children living in shelters. Some of these children have already faced so many adversities in their short lives, reading and learning shouldn't have to be one of them.
My amazingly inquisitive students are so eager to learn, they just need the resources to be able to do that!
I want to give my students the opportunity to explore the world, and enjoy adventures through literature that inspires excitement and motivation for them in the future. I teach in an inclusion setting where I have both Special Education and General Education students. Many of these children are excited about the opportunity to learn something new. They are just looking for high interest books to engage and impel them to continue a life long love of reading.
My Project
These high interest books will be used during independent reading to give the students opportunities to read a variety of great books on their level. The more books they read on their level, the more progress they make.
The greater the books, the more exciting the world!
The more choice the students have when selecting books to read on their level, the more they will remain engaged. They are then able to practice the decoding and comprehension strategies taught during small groups and have greater success at reaching their reading goals. The funding of this project would support many of these students who have many hurdles to jump, not only in reading, but life!
