Help me give my students the guided reading materials that they need to become successful readers. My class needs word work materials, guided readers, and reading passages to help with comprehension.

My Students

My first grade students is a wonderful group of six and seven-year-old boys and girls that come from varying social and economic backgrounds, some being more fortunate than others. Our school provides 100% free lunch and breakfast and many children receive backpack food for the weekend.

Most students lack educational support at home and it is my job to meet the needs of every student that comes through my door.

I want to provide a safe and structured environment to help them all thrive, no matter where they come from or what they lack.

My Project

The materials in my project will help my students thrive and learn how to read. Guided Reading consists of sight word instruction, word work and reading leveled readers. They need to have the experience and exposure to books at their reading level as well as activities that can help them become more successful in reading unknown words and understanding the text that they are reading.

Students read in guided reading groups 2-3 times a week with the teacher.

They need to have many opportunities to read new text at their level, make words with different manipulatives that relate to their learning style and most importantly, they need to feel successful. First grade is such an important year to lay the foundation that will last a lifetime. What they learn in first grade will continue to be built upon in the years to come, but this year is one of the most important to grow as a reader.
