Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
With all the budget cuts in education, subjects like social studies has taken a back seat. Current events and social studies are still important subjects for my students to be exposed to.
I have a motivated and eager group of first graders.
Many of the students in my classroom are below grade level in all academic areas. Every day progress is made. The students live in a high poverty area. None of the students in my class have parents who attended or finished college and the majority of their parents have not finished high school. All the students in the school receive free lunch.
My Project
These weekly news magazines will allow my students to learn in-depth about social issues and concerns not only in their community but in places around the world and with the 2012 election being only several months away, I feel it's crucial for students to be apart of the election process on how a US president is elected. There are so many current issues that my students are not exposed to because there aren't any current social studies at my school site.
I want my students to be able to compete socially with their across town counterparts.
It is not enough to read, write and count but it is crucial to be a contributing member of the society by knowing what's going in the world around them. Scholastic News magazines will give my students the knowledge to discuss and participate positively in social activities with peers their age.
