Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a first-year teacher, I envision my library as a place where students will be able to indulge in reading that not only sparks the mind but allows them to see themselves in the stories we read. As a school community, we value diversity, which is why I selected books that are not only great to read, but also friendly to my emerging bilingual students. Many books are dual language or take us on a trip to places and cultures we may never see.
I believe a classroom library should be inclusive and, FULL of literature that allows them opportunities to read and develop their literacy skills.
The books that have been selected were chosen because they embodied the diversity and storytelling that is special to one person or another. When I envision my classroom for next year, I see our library as an integral part of cultivating our community and allowing us the opportunities to share and grow together.
Having a variety of books for read-alouds and independent reading will allow my students to explore and think critically about varying perspectives, even in 1st grade!
