The Modern Classroom Library for Middle Schoolers

Help me give my students a classroom library that represents their interests, identities, and reading levels!

My Students

I am privileged to serve roughly 100, brilliant, resilient, and driven young scholars who will enter the school building for the first time in a year and a half at the beginning of September. In their first year of middle school, my 6th graders embark on a new journey in their schooling, and with that comes new challenges and changes. Reading for many young tweens feels cumbersome, boring, or "uncool." A reluctant reader isn't simply a child who doesn't like to read — it's a child who hasn't discovered books they love yet.

I want even the reluctant readers to realize the power and value of language and the magic of getting lost in a book.

Please help me build a classroom library that represents, affirms, engages, and challenges all students!

My Project

The best way to help students improve their reading is to read more! In my classroom, reading is a priority and expectation. Each class period students have time to read independently. The only goal of this is to help foster a love for reading. They are not assessed on their independent reading. The biggest struggle I have with middle school readers is not their reading abilities but rather their perception of reading. Students tell me, "It's boring!" or, "It's no cool to read!" or, "It's too much." I could tell them that studies show a positive correlation between the amount of reading for pleasure a child does and their grades at school. However, that is not enough to convince readers that have never fallen in love with books before.

With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of topics, genres, and authors that will allow them to read independently!

And most importantly, experience texts that mirror them and their identities. My hope is that this library opens a new world for students inside of my classroom as well as at home.
