I teach Health and Physical Education to seventh and eighth graders at Champ Cooper School in Robert, Louisiana. I take great pride in teaching Health and Physical Education at Champ Cooper. My students and I work hard at trying to keep a healthy environment at our school and our community.
I spend one whole six weeks period on Health per school year. I cover Drug Abuse, Alcohol Abuse, Tobacco Use, Drugs and How They Harm the Body, Drug Prevention, and I also give my students a Health Project. One of the things that I emphasize is the harm of smoking. There are so many diseases and health problems today because of smoking. The one thing that I would really like to have in my classroom is the model of a normal lung and the model of a smoker's lung. I have seen these products in some of the Health magazines that I receive at school. I just don't have the funds in my school to purchase these products. I feel that these models will give my students a better understanding of how much smoking hurts your lungs and also how smoking can give you health problems for the rest of your life. These models demonstrate how good a normal lung breathes and how hard it is to breath with a smoker's lung. This is something that all of my students can benefit from. I really feel that this will help my students make the right choices when they are faced with that one question that every young person experiences at some point in their life, "Do you want a cigarette?". The age group that I teach is at the point in their lives where they will have to make a choice. My job is to aid them in making the right choice. I believe that seeing what smoking can actually do to your body will help change a young person's mind about it.
Health is a big part of our life. I know that it would be a huge asset to my Health lessons and also to my students.
