My Students

I have the joy of teaching Kindergarten in a neighborhood school. We receive Title One funding because more than 50% of our population receives free or reduced lunch. Students range in ability because some have attended preschool and others have not. They are excited and eager to learn through play! Students range in age from 5 to 6. The classroom is set up to foster creativity and exploration through hands on materials. Students are encouraged to collaborate with one another and share their findings.

My Project

These materials will allow for concrete exploration of mathematics and map concepts. Students need to build an understanding for quantity, shapes, and graphing before moving to more abstract lessons.

Students must be given the opportunity to learn at their own pace.

These materials will be used in a math and social studies center allowing children to work through the concepts independently and collaboratively. Using innovated materials such as KEVA blocks and a mouse bot, allows children to build problem solving skills. The beads and the 100 board will provide students the opportunity to develop an understanding for quantity and number patterns and progress to the fraction tower. The fraction tower provides children an opportunity to visually see how an amount is broken in different ways.

Kindergarten students need the opportunity to understand the world. By using hands on maps and matching cards students grow to develop a sense of world and space. This opportunity will provide background knowledge for more difficult concepts in years to come.
