The Missing Tenor Saxophone

My students need a tenor saxophone in the band class in order to achieve full instrumentation so that they have the ability to do actual band performances.

My Students

My school had previously had at least six years of band inactivity prior to my coming. My short term goal was to get students playing all available instruments, and then I wanted to get the band performing. I am in my third year, and we have three performances planned, but need additional instruments.

My students live in a high crime neighborhood and they all attend the local middle school.

Our school has been designated as a Title I School, and this year all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Although there is an abundance of crime in the area, my students have embraced music as an outlet and have chosen to participate with the school band program. They are looking forward to participating in performances currently planned for the band. Because there previously was not a viable band program, the school has very few instruments; however, the students would like to do fundraisers to assist with purchasing instruments. The majority of my students are committed to building a superior band program. A large number of them attend band practice after school on a regular basis, but because we share instruments, they are not all able to play together. They come to the band room each morning just to say hello before beginning their day. My students are eager to learn music.

My Project

I am requesting a tenor saxophone because the school does not have one. One of my major goals for the band program this year is for my students to be able to participate in Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE). This is a state run performance evaluation where bands are actually graded on a scale of 1-5 with 1 being superior. Last year, I was able to take my students to observe this competition, and I promised them that we would participate this year. However, if we do not have a tenor saxophone we will not be able to perform. There is a requirement for bands to have instrumentation that's on the music score. The music requires a tenor saxophone. In addition to the score requiring a tenor saxophone, most middle school trombone players rely on the tenor saxophone for pitch. In addition to being able to participate at LGPE, I hope to start a jazz band program this year. It would be impossible to have a jazz band without a tenor saxophone. Students will learn how to work as a team and not give up.

This project will have a huge impact on my students.

They will have an opportunity to perform at LGPE and to learn an additional genre of music - jazz. Putting music aside, having this instrument will impact students because they will have the ability to participate in a meaningful activity. In looking at the area where they live and I work, they could very easily participate in a number of "other" activities; however, they have chosen music. I'd like to give them this opportunity.
