Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Those of us teaching in inner-city schools are beginning to wake up to the reality that if we want to sustain life and secure the future for our children, we have to start acting like we are a part of nature. If we want a strong economy, we need all students to have access to college preparatory science classes. The students that I work with are the most "at-risk" youth in our city, but they don't care any less about the future than those of us who are living under more fortunate circumstances.
Our students would benefit in several ways by learning about botany, but there are no plants yet in our school, no soil, just cement. We are trying to prepare students for college on a diet of soft drinks, candy, chips, and processed foods. One of the first actions that we need to take, is going to depend on help from the humble worm. We call her/him "the mighty worm" because the worm can really help us turn things around in our school and on our planet. These creatures deserve credit for creating fertile soil on Planet Earth, along with some bacteria and fungus, and bugs. We gave dry composting a try but were not terribly successful. We have also built enough planter box space for 150 yards of soil, right on the black top, since there is no earth that we can see or touch in our school yard. We are working hard to obtain some top soil for our planter beds.
Students who grow their own food, from the ground up, so to speak, are more likely to feel a connection between what they eat and they earth that they will someday be responsible for. It has also been shown that students who eat a healthy diet show great improvement in their concentration, outlook, are more resilient and have fewer behavior problems. They also do better academically, which gives them a better shot at a college career.
We need to begin with good soil, and if this soil comes from our organic waste and left-over food, then we are also helping the earth. We wish to begin by reusing, recycling, and most importantly by composting. We will need four worm composting kits and a digital thermometer. If you help us the students will be happier and more prepared for college. The worms will be happy too.
